Most Common Football Injuries

Football is one of the most dangerous sports in the industry. The most severe injury that occurs is in helmet-to-helmet collisions. However, that doesn’t mean that other injuries don’t happen, which can be more common than head injuries. We’re going to talk about the most common football injuries of the industry.

Achilles

Whether you tear your Achilles or develop tendonitis in your Achilles, these injuries can be excruciating. They severely limit your mobility and playability. In addition, the severity of damage contributes to players missing anywhere from 4 to 6 months of activity in the sport. This damage results in missing many practices and potentially many games, if not the whole season.

Ankle Sprains and Strains

Because of how suddenly football players need to move and change directions on the field, it’s no secret that ankle injuries are among the most common ones in football. These ankle injuries can be graded on mild, moderate, or severe scales. Severe injuries can potentially result in a 4-month recovery timeline.

Knee Injuries

Although your knees are a small part of your entire body, they have many elements that are susceptible to injury. Much like ankles, because of the movement in football, these injuries are also very common. Some knee injuries that occur include:

  • Fractures
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury
  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Dislocated kneecap (patella)
  • Meniscus tears

Some injuries require surgery; others require a short recovery time. However, some knee injuries can be so severe that they’ll require missing a season, if not more.

Overtraining Injuries

Overtraining injuries are most common at the highest level of football because those athletes tend to train more and at higher intensities than amateur athletes. However, these injuries are not impossible with amateurs. An overtraining injury would be inflammation in soft tissue that can be painful and limit mobility and efficiency.
